Ah, ropa usada (sp. for used clothing) in Hidalgo, TX where one can buy clothes by the pound in warehouses where the clothes are piled high! Not all of the clothes are used. Some still have the stickers and tags on it. All across the country, stores dump their unsold items by binding them between palettes and selling it to the ropas by the truckload. You can find sweet deals, but you have to work for it. (That’s fine by me. I have more time than money, AND I can proudly state I paid 33¢ / lb. for what I am wearing.)
I was introduced to the “rag barns” by some Canadian snowbirds in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas back in like 2005. The ladies of the RV parks go to the ropas to buy clothes for silly fashion shows as well as to buy materials for quilt making. (The quilts are then donated to the poor each holiday season.)
It sure was fun to let Cooper climb and tumble on the 9-12 foot pile of cloth. However, I would NOT stop paying attention for even a second. It’s not a situation where one would want to play an impromptu game of “Where’s the Baby?”

Sorry it took so long to upload! We had over 3 hours of footage so it took me a while to edit. And I’m so sorry a lot of the words are off from the picture, I have no idea how that happened! This baby shower was thrown by my side of the family on April 10, 2010 and Gabe’s side will be throwing us one in May =) I was 30 weeks and 1 day pregnant and we had so much fun! Lilia got SO many things, especially clothes! We also got a bassinet, baby swing, infant bath tub, high chair, and a travel system so sorry I couldnt fit everything into the video! We played so many fun games and you’ll see some of them in the vid. Enjoy! =)

NBC 25 Investigates Suspicious Product Removal at Family Dollar
Reported by: Mary King
Thursday, Apr 9, 2009 @06:56pm EST
HAGERSTOWN, MD – What would you do if you saw several pairs of children’s shoes taken off the shelf and destroyed while you were shopping?
One NBC 25 viewer says he saw it happen at a local dollar store, and called us to investigate.
William Wagonhoffer says he didn’t understand why dozens of shoes were being destroyed instead of donated in these tough economic times.
Workers at Family Dollar say they’re following new lead regulations.
Rick Adams of the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce said, “So while they’re may be no lead in the product because we don’t have a testing report on the product, we don’t feel comfortable selling it to our customer or donating it for that matter because ultimately it could be an unsafe product. So better safe than sorry.”
The Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act went into effect February of this year, but will not be enforced until 2010.

Goodwill is gleaning through children’s items that they will allow to be sold in their stores per new regulations now in place with the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act which went into affect February 10, 2009. A rep with a large notebook explained that Goodwill has always been proactive in pulling recalled childrens’ items. At least this thrift store chain appears to be using some commons sense and at least in Omaha, Nebraska, isn’t making it policy to not sell anything for children!

How To Find The Proper Fit For Children’s Shoes:
Getting the right shoe for your child is extremely important. Zappos.com knows just what to look for in your lil tikes first pair of shoes. While hard soled shoes are not necessary until your child starts to walk, prewalkers and crib shoes will offer protection and get them used to wearing something on their feet. Prewalkers and crib shoes are more like a protective sock that mimic barefoot walking. They can be scrunched in the hand. A firstwalker will have a hard sole but still be flexible to ensure proper development of the foot and walking gait. When youre trying the shoes on, make sure they arent too big to keep your toddler from tripping. How do I know if my child’s shoe has enough growing room? The recommended toe room allows 3/8 inch to ½ inch between the longest toe and the end of the shoe. Since children grow fast, measure their feet every 2-3 months. Following these tips from Zappos.com will have your tots waddling in style in no time!

Tiffany Bjorlie who owns Lundeby’s Ecobaby knows all too well how the CPSIA is affecting what items she carries in her Tulsa shop. She explains how Selecta has pulled their eco-friendly toys from the US market. And toys are not the only items that could run scarce. That sweet handmade dress for your little princess or 100% organic cotton onesie for your bouncing baby boy may be on the “extinct” handmade list as well due to stringent testing that will go into force per the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act on February 10, 2009. AND HANDMADE BABY BOOTIES if not TESTED will be ILLEGAL!
