In
July 2000, fifteen young people in care attended two meetings to
discuss the Rights & Responsibilities for those living apart
from their families and in the care of the Western Health Board.
The young people openly discussed and
shared their views on what it is like to live in care and to be
a young person who needs a variety of services at this time in
their lives.
Seven of the group agreed to help
compile booklets or leaflets – one for younger children and
one for teenagers. There is an additional leaflet that is a
summary of rights. These outline the rights of young people in
care and the responsibilities that accompany these rights.
The rights of children in care are
derived from the UN Convention, Child Care Legislation,
Statutory Regulations, Civil Rights, Social Services
Inspectorate Standards and good care practice.
